Black Seed Oil for Hair: How to Use It, by Hair Type

Black seed oil, also sold as kalonji oil, is a rich, slightly heavy oil. People use it on the scalp and lengths to condition hair, add shine and reduce breakage from dryness. How you use it depends on your hair: a light pre-wash oil for fine hair, and sealing or an overnight soak for thick, curly or coily hair.

Is black seed oil good for your hair?

As a conditioning oil, yes. It does what good oils do: it softens strands, adds shine, and helps keep dry ends from snapping.

Many people reach for it hoping for more than that. We don't make hair-growth claims for it. The evidence isn't there, and under FDA rules a product claiming to restore hair growth is a drug, not a cosmetic.

How do you use black seed oil by hair type?

Hair type Best way to use it How much How often
Fine or straight Pre-wash: on the scalp and ends 30 to 60 minutes before shampoo 3 to 5 drops Once or twice a week
Wavy or medium Pre-wash, or one or two drops smoothed over damp ends A few drops Once or twice a week
Thick, curly or coily Seal over your leave-in, or overnight under a satin cap Enough to coat the ends Overnight weekly; sealing as needed
Dry scalp Massage into the scalp, leave on, wash out next day Half a dropper Once a week

If your hair goes flat or greasy, you used too much. Start small and add.

How do you apply it?

  • Warm a small amount between your palms.
  • Part your hair and apply to the scalp with your fingertips.
  • Massage for about two minutes.
  • Work what's left on your hands through your lengths and ends.
  • For an overnight soak, cover with a satin cap. Shampoo in the morning; shampoo twice if your hair still feels oily.

What can you mix it with?

Most people use black seed oil as part of a blend, not on its own:

  • Rosemary oil: a popular scalp-oil ingredient with a fresh, herbal scent. It's an essential oil, so it's always diluted, never used neat.
  • Jojoba oil: light and fast-absorbing. Good for fine hair that hates heavy oils.
  • Castor oil: very thick. Useful for sealing coily ends; too heavy for most fine hair.
  • Coconut oil: common in pre-wash oils.

Our Black Seed Hair Oil is already a blend of cold-pressed black seed oil, rosemary oil and jojoba, in a 4 oz dropper bottle, with no parabens, sulfates or mineral oil.

Is kalonji oil the same as black seed oil?

Yes. Kalonji is the South Asian name for Nigella sativa, the same seed. You may also see black cumin oil or habbatus sauda. Check the label for Nigella sativa. More in what black seed oil is.

Who should be careful?

Patch test first if you have sensitive skin, especially with blends that contain essential oils. Keep it out of your eyes. If your scalp itches, burns or flakes more after using it, stop. Our skin guide shows how to patch test properly.

Quick answers

Can I leave black seed oil in my hair overnight?

Yes. Many people do a weekly overnight soak under a satin cap and shampoo it out in the morning.

Is black seed oil good for fine hair?

It can be, used sparingly as a pre-wash oil. Left in, it can weigh fine hair down.

Will black seed oil make my hair greasy?

Too much will. Start with three to five drops and wash it out if your hair is fine.

Does black seed oil grow hair?

We don't claim it does, and we'd be wary of anyone who promises it. What it reliably does is condition: softer, shinier hair and less breakage from dryness.

What does black seed oil smell like in hair?

Peppery and herbal. Blends with rosemary smell fresher and milder.
