Black Seed Tallow Balm: What's in It, How to Use It, Does It Smell?

Our Black Seed Tallow Balm has four main ingredients: grass-fed beef tallow, cold-pressed black seed oil, raw honey and organic beeswax, plus a natural essential-oil blend. It's a rich, water-free balm for dry skin on the face, hands and body. A little goes a long way: warm a small amount between your fingers and press it in.

What's in it, and what does each ingredient do?

Ingredient What it is Why it's in the balm
Grass-fed beef tallow Rendered beef fat; solid at room temperature, melts on contact with skin Rich, long-lasting moisture
Cold-pressed black seed oil Oil pressed from Nigella sativa seeds Softens and conditions; makes the balm easier to spread
Raw honey A natural humectant, meaning it attracts water Helps skin hold on to moisture
Organic beeswax Wax made by honeybees Gives the balm its texture and seals moisture in
Essential-oil blend Plant-derived scent Scent; no synthetic fragrance

There's no water in it, it's petroleum-free, and there's no synthetic fragrance.

Does tallow balm smell like beef?

It depends on the tallow, and we won't pretend otherwise. How tallow smells comes down to which fat was rendered and how carefully. Some tallow is close to odorless; some keeps a faint fatty, savory note. Ours is scented only with a natural essential-oil blend, with no synthetic fragrance. Expect a light natural scent, not a perfumed one, and possibly a faint note from the tallow itself.

How do you use a tallow balm?

  • Use less than you think. Start with a pea-sized amount.
  • Warm it first. Rub it between your fingertips for a few seconds until it softens.
  • Press, don't rub. Press it into clean skin that's still slightly damp, then smooth.
  • Face: a thin layer at night, as the last step.
  • Hands, elbows, heels: whenever they feel dry. Heels do well with a thicker layer under socks overnight.

If it feels greasy, you used too much. Blot the extra off and use less next time.

Who is it for, and who should skip it?

It suits: dry skin, people who like short ingredient lists, and anyone whose usual lotion disappears in five minutes.

Skip it, or patch test first, if:

  • You're vegan or vegetarian. It contains beef tallow and beeswax.
  • You react to bee products or essential oils.
  • Your skin is very reactive. Try it on a small spot twice a day for 7 to 10 days first, the method the American Academy of Dermatology suggests. Details in our skin guide.

Does it contain seed oil?

Yes. Black seed oil is a seed oil, and it's one of the balm's main ingredients. Many people who use tallow on their skin also avoid seed oils, so we'd rather say it plainly. Read is black seed oil a seed oil? before you buy if that matters to you.

How should you store it?

Keep it somewhere cool, with the lid on. Tallow softens in heat; if it melts in a hot car it will set again, though the texture may change a little.

Quick answers

Is tallow good for your face?

Many people use it as a rich night moisturizer. Use a thin layer, and patch test first if your skin is reactive.

Is tallow balm greasy?

It's rich. A thin layer on slightly damp skin sinks in much better than a thick one on dry skin.

Is black seed tallow balm vegan?

No. It contains grass-fed beef tallow and beeswax.

Does it have a strong smell?

It's meant to be mild. It's scented only with an essential-oil blend, and the tallow may add a faint natural note.

Can I use it on my lips?

It isn't made as a lip product, and the essential oils may tingle. Use a lip balm for lips.
